They manage to keep vaguely on topic, perhaps a tough task given their general ennui towards the Series 6 finale which contained so many twists and turns that everything pretty much wrapped up where it was expected to. BBC America - Anglophenia has A Companion To The Doctor’s Companions: Sergeant Benton and Mike Yates. At the start of the Third Doctor’s tenure in the TARDIS, there was a distinct plan to move the show out of the realms of the entirely fantastical, and to give it a basis in what was then modern day fact. To this end, the idea was cooked up that the Time Lords would exile the Doctor from the universe at large, confining him to Earth in the early years of the 1970s, and giving him a job, as scientific advisor to the newly-formed UNIT. This solved quite a few production problems, not least the one of having to find a new alien landscape for every new script, but it did raise one significant issue. If the Doctor doesn’t travel any more, and he isn’t walking around explaining foreign worlds to his star-struck companions – or to be strictly accurate for the Third Doctor era, companion singular – how do we flesh out the human stories behind the action? There are no strangers to meet, no alien cultures to explore.....

Tea with Morbius has Why I hate Pyramids of Mars. (It) is hailed by many fans as one of the greatest stories of the series. I dissent totally from this conclusion and would argue that it is the most overrated Doctor Who stories ever and illustrates some of the failings of the Hinchliffe era. There are of course many far worse Doctor Who stories, but this one is particularly obnoxious by virtue of the praise that is lavished upon it....

This extraordinary TARDIS Playset is based on the ever-popular sci-fi TV series Doctor Who.

On Friday, 3 February at 7.00pm on BBC Three, you can catch School Reunion, followed by The Girl in the Fireplace at 7.45pm. So that's a chance to enjoy Sarah Jane's return to the world of Doctor Who and the ingenious adventure written by Steven Moffat that featured Sophia Myles as Reinette.
And on Saturday, 4 February, also on BBC Three at 7.00pm, you can witness The Rise of the Cybermen! The first of a two-part adventure written by Tom MacRae, it saw the Doctor visit an alternative Earth and facing the rebirth of some of his oldest enemies...

Matt Smith Proposes to Girlfriend at Doctor Who Experience

Matt Smith last night proposed to his long-standing girlfriend at the Doctor Who Experience in London. The marriage offer, which Matt had been planning for weeks (with some help from BBC Worldwide), came as a complete surprise to his girlfriend who was under the impression she was visiting the capital for a shopping trip.
Matt, 22, from Rochford, Essex coincidentally shares the same name with the star of the globally successful BBC TV series and even chose to dress in a tweed jacket and bow tie for the occasion, the standard uniform of the Eleventh Timelord. He stunned his wife-to-be, Stacie-Anne Dilkes, by pretending to be an exhibit in a section of the Experience which hosts original props, costumes and monsters from almost 50 years of the programme – before bending down on one knee and asking for her hand in marriage. And happily, she said YES!

Review: The Krotons (or ‘A Story Where The Worst Thing About It Is It’s Only Saving Grace’)

When you ask the average ‘classic’ Dr Who fan who the best writer in the show’s history is, there’s a good chance the response will be Robert Holmes. He was the script editor during the highs of the Tom Baker era, the writer of stories like Ark in Space, Talons of Weng Chiang and the Caves of Androzani and the man who invested such popular enemies as the Sontarans and the Autons.
The prevailing wisdom is that the man is a genius who could do no wrong.
And yet the first two stories to come from his pen – The Krotons and the Space Pirates – are not held in high regard. It’s like people don’t want to attribute them to Holmes.
From this angle, the Kroton costume looks very impressive in my opinionWe’re still couple of stories away from the Space Pirates, but today’s review will deal with The Krotons.
It’s an odd story. It’s not that people think it’s *bad*, but rather it’s just that people can’t seem to take it seriously.
But why? It’s a story written by the great Bob Holmes and guest starring Philip Madoc in his first appearance for the show.
What’s the problem?......

Review: That Jackanape (The Keeper of Traken)

It’s January 31st, 1981. John Lennon is down to two top ten singles - “Imagine” at number one, and “Woman” at number two. “Woman” takes the number one a week later, holds it for two weeks, and then yields to Joe Dolce Music Theater’s “Shaddap You Face.” John Lennon’s posthumous chart success going down to “Shaddap You Face” has to, upon reflection, be one of the better metaphors for the fall of civilization ever. Ultravox, Slade, Dire Straits, Blondie, and Stevie Wonder also chart.
In real news we’re a bit thin on the ground. Gro Harlem Brundtland becomes Prime Minister of Norway, while Wojciech Jaruzelski becomes Prime Minister of Poland and immediately begins trying to find an excuse to impose martial law. And the Stardust Fire happens in Dublin, killing 48 and teaching everyone an important lesson about not locking the fire exits that continues to periodically and fatally be ignored. On a related note, 21 people die in the Karaiskakis Stadium disaster in Greece, likely because of a failure to open an exit gate enough.
While on television it’s The Keeper of Traken, a story that threatens to be overshadowed by its continuity significance. This story also marks a personal milestone for the blog - from this story on I have seen every episode of the series at least once, although sometimes only that and nearly 20 years ago. These two facts are not entirely unrelated. For the archive-centered Doctor Who fan the primary appeal of The Keeper of Traken, superficially, is a triple-header of events: the introduction of Nyssa, the introduction of the Anthony Ainley version of the Master, and the beginning of the loose trilogy of stories covering the Doctor’s regeneration.
Every single part of this is horrifically misguided. One of the more tedious debates available in fandom is whether or not Nyssa counts as a companion in this story. It’s tedious because it’s a classic pitched battle not merely over no stakes whatsoever but over a technicality of an invented concept. There is no doubt that Nyssa is a companion, there is no doubt that she debuts in this story, but because she doesn’t join the TARDIS crew this story and is instead brought back in the next story there’s a debate over whether or not she’s a companion in this story. Personally I advocate the far more entertaining fandom debate - if we take Asylum seriously and assume that the Doctor knows Nyssa is a companion from the start, does the Doctor’s not taking Nyssa with him at the end of this story constitute a deliberate attempt to alter history?
